One of the most iconic peaks in central Valais, the Pierre Avoi reaches a height of 2,473 meters. Accessed by foot, you can take the Savoleyres ski lift to get a head start on the hike or walk from Verbier following the signs to Pierre Avoi up through the larch forests and steep pastures. The last section of the climb involves some scrambling over rocks, and the last few meters to the peak are climbed using a series of ladders screwed into the rock but are very passable for most people with appropriate footwear and a sense for the high mountains, including children.
Once at the top, Pierre Avoi provides for a fantastic viewpoint overlooking Verbier, the Val de Bagnes, La Tzoumaz and the Rhone Valley. There is a plateau at the peak so it is possible to sit and enjoy a picnic or a drink with a view before the descent. It’s a steep climb but the rewards at the top are worthy of the effort! You descend following the same ladders and path down, and then have a few options for travelling back to Verbier, which is about a 2 hour hike away using the most direct route.
